A Digital Eye

The Project

Developed for the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) 2020 student assessment, A Digital Eye challenges the common perception of mathematics as rigid, intimidating, or detached from daily life.

By focusing on typographic experimentation and hybrid media, the publication explores 15 culturally and scientifically significant numbers, reimagining how mathematical principles are visualized, contextualized, and absorbed.

Process

How can an analog medium spark curiosity and present numbers through a human-centric lens? The brief called for a typographic approach to transform a traditional book into a multi-sensory experience for detailed and visual readers.

The concept focused on layering print and digital media. Each chapter was designed as its own typographic composition, with selected spreads extending into motion through AR.

Solution

Integrating augmented reality directly into the physical publication turns
the printed page into an interactive canvas:

  • Curated Content Architecture: Structured around 15 core numbers, the book investigates their cultural weight, history, and scientific significance through deliberate typographic hierarchy.
  • Custom AR Motion Design: Some chapters are paired with a custom motion piece designed in Adobe After Effects, visually translating abstract formulas and notable facts into kinetic typography and animation.
  • Seamless Physical-Digital Bridging: Readers activate the digital layer directly from the layout via printed target markers, triggering the animation in real time without breaking the reading flow.
  • Layered Pedagogy: The layout accommodates multiple modes of engagement, letting readers engage with the long-form typographic essays or scan the AR triggers to immediately grasp essential concepts in motion.
